KUALA LUMPUR: Petroleum Sarawak Berhand’s (PETROS) appointment as gas aggregator for Sarawak’s domestic market will be honoured by all industry players.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said this was part of the Joint Declaration signed between the Prime Minister and Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on May 21 this year.

She said the declaration outlined coordination between Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) and PETROS, with all federal and state laws on gas distribution in Sarawak to coexist and be respected.

“PETRONAS will maintain its role under the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA74) from upstream activities to LNG exports, while PETROS handles the domestic market,” she told the Dewan Rakyat recently.

She was responding to a query from Serian MP Datuk Seri Dr Richard Riot Jaem on the current status of any overlapping powers between PETRONAS and PETROS in Sarawak, and the coordination measures taken.

Azalina added that all existing agreements between PETRONAS and or or its subsidiaries with third parties for the sale of liquefied natural gas (LNG), from upstream activities to LNG exports, would remain unaffected and continue to be in force.

“The Joint Declaration reflected the commitment of both the federal and Sarawak governments to avoid overlapping powers and to ensure the sustainable development of the oil and gas industry in Sarawak through collaborative and orderly arrangements,” she said.
