SIBU: Local MP Oscar Ling has called on the state government to allocate more funds towards raising low-lying roads in the aftermath of severe flooding here in recent days.
He also urged the authorities to repair potholes caused by the floods to ensure road safety for users.
“Additionally, I suggest that the authorities install water level markers in flood-prone areas so that the public can gauge the water depth and drive safely,” Ling added.
In a statement Wednesday he said over the past two days, his service centre team had visited several severely affected villages on the west bank of Sibu, including Lebaan, Bukit Lan, Sungai Sadit, and Sungai Bidut, to offer relief and distribute food to residents impacted by the floods.
Ling said the low-lying villages on Sibu’s west bank face severe flooding whenever the tide rises, pointing out that areas such as Lebaan, Bukit Lan, Sungai Sadit, and Sungai Bidut are among the hardest-hit.
These villages, he said, are far from the town, and many small roads have been submerged.

He observed that many houses and vegetable farms, were flooded, causing severe crop losses for farmers.
He stated that the food assistance provided by his service centre in the past two days was targeted at those whose homes are still affected by rising or stagnant floodwaters.
According to him, many residents remain trapped inside their homes, unable to leave, with elderly individuals particularly affected.
He explained that the food aid primarily consisted of eggs, instant noodles, and biscuits, which are common household necessities.
He expressed hope that the floodwaters would recede quickly, allowing residents to resume their normal lives as soon as possible.
In particular, he hoped the tide levels on Sibu’s west bank will drop soon so that farmers can return to their fields and resume planting vegetables for their livelihood.
