KUCHING: The GPS Government is considering an ambitious plan to transform thousands of kilometres of dormant logging roads into organised public highways.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the proposal to develop 5,000 kilometres of unused logging roads, including those in the Kapit Division, into public roads will be reviewed.
“If this plan is implemented, it will improve connectivity in rural areas through a more organised road system,” he said his statement issued today.
Additionally, he said that the Sarawak Government and the Federal Government recently reached a mutual agreement to advance the development of the oil and gas industry in Sarawak.
“This move reflects a shared commitment to respecting both federal and Sarawak laws.
“It is the aspiration of the people of Sarawak to use the returns from the state’s natural resources to develop the state.
“Once again, I wish to thank the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who understands the dreams of Sarawak’s people to progress like other developed regions,” he said.
Abang Johari said that this aspiration is the legacy of past leaders who, together with other national leaders, formed Malaysia in 1963.
“The hopes of those leaders in 1963 remain the hopes of Sarawak’s people today – that Sarawak can become a developed and high-income region as outlined in the PCDS 2030 goals,” he said.
