BETONG: The enforcement of the Sarawak Labour Ordinance (Amendment) 2025, which comes into effect today (May 1), is expected to ensure justice for all workers, particularly those in under-protected sectors.

Dr Andrew Emparan

Sarawak Centre of Technical Excellence (Centexs) Betong branch manager, Dr Andrew Emparan, said the implementation marks a positive shift towards stronger protection for workers in the state.

“This amendment is highly significant and reflects the government’s commitment to improving workers’ conditions.

“For example, the expansion of the ordinance’s coverage to include all workers regardless of wage level or job type is a very positive step.

“It ensures that every worker, including those in previously under-protected sectors, receives appropriate protection, reducing exploitation and promoting fairness for all,” he told Suara Sarawak on Wednesday (April 30).

He also highlighted the importance of the new provisions to address workplace discrimination.

“The introduction of provisions to tackle workplace discrimination is an essential step in creating a fairer and more inclusive working environment.

“Workers must feel safe to report any form of discrimination without fear of retaliation.

“That said, I believe the effectiveness of these amendments depends on awareness, education, and cooperation among employers, employees, and authorities.

“Therefore, a coordinated and effective approach must be developed by all involved parties,” he added.

On maternity and paternity leave, reduced working hours, flexible work arrangements, and minimum housing standards for workers, Dr Andrew emphasised that these changes contribute to the overall well-being of society.

Imelda Richard Fuchau

Meanwhile, adviser to the Polytechnic Metro Betong Sarawak Alumni Association (PMBS), Imelda Richard Fuchau, described the enforcement of the amended labour law as a progressive step in protecting the dignity and rights of all workers.

“This is not just a legislative change, but an important progressive move in safeguarding the dignity and rights of all workers.

“The amendment brings many meaningful changes, ensuring that every worker receives the rights and protection they deserve.

“Moreover, the increase in maternity leave to 98 days and the introduction of seven days’ paternity leave align with the evolution of modern, family-inclusive work practices.

“I also believe that the new provision limiting working hours to 45 per week, along with flexible work arrangements and the right to file discrimination complaints, are positive steps toward improving workers’ welfare, including those in the education sector,” she added.

As a lecturer, she sees this as a significant development for the academic sector, which increasingly values work-life balance.

“Thank you to the government. This is a very meaningful gift, especially as it comes into effect in conjunction with this year’s Labour Day celebration.

“I hope the enforcement of this ordinance brings positive change and is implemented fairly and effectively by all stakeholders,” she said.
