KUCHING: Sarawak has positioned itself as a pioneer in the field of labour rights and worker empowerment.

In stating this Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala, highlighted the state’s recent labour reforms under the amended Sarawak Labour Ordinance (SLO).

“The SLO sets a benchmark for other states’ employee welfare as well. This is the best Labour Day present for our workers,” he said at the 2025 Workers Day celebration officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre (HEEC) here today.

He said among the important amendments that been done are extension of maternity leave from 60 to 98 days and also seven days of paid paternity leave for fathers to support and strengthen family relationships.

“Other than that, reduction of weekly working hours from 48 to 45 hours where it allows employees to have better work-life balance.

“Flexible Work Arrangements are being introduced, enabling employees to apply for adaptable working hours that suit modern day needs,” he added.

Not only that, Gerawat also highlighted that there are new provisions against sexual harassment and discrimination at the work place to protect employees.

“These reforms are not just legal updates, they reflect the values of a state that prioritises social justice, workers dignity and sustainable development,” he said.

The success of these reforms has to do with the cooperation between Sarawak and the federal government, particularly the Human Resources Ministry, along with the active involvement of the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) Sarawak.

Gerawat also praised Abang Johari, with his visionary development strategy, namely the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).

“It focuses on human capital as the core for the development of a state and nation.

“The Premier’s support has been crucial in pushing forward labour reforms that are both timely and progressive.

“Together, we will build a Sarawak that is not only progressive and prosperous, but also fair, inclusive,” Gerawat said.
