KUCHING: The amendment to the Sarawak Building Ordinance 1994 is set to be tabled at this year’s Sarawak State Assembly, with the inclusion of provisions related to the Green Building Index (GBI).
According to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, incorporating the GBI into the ordinance is crucial as it aligns with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s efforts to promote green development in the state.
Additionally, he emphasised that the amendment is necessary to address both the current and future needs of the building industry.
“There are many amendments that need to be made to the ordinance. Among them is the inclusion of facilities for electric vehicle charging and automated external defibrillator (AED) devices in public areas.
“However, the Premier’s first instruction was that the amendment must include provisions related to the GBI. This shows the Premier’s strong commitment to ensuring that the GBI is part of Sarawak’s green development agenda,” he said during a grand event launching d’Isabelle, Sarawak’s first Green Building Index (GBI)-certified residential high-rise, at the Sheraton Hotel Kuching yesterday (Jan 11).

Commenting on the launch of d’Isabelle, Sim commended the private sector, such as RJ Group, for stepping up to meet the needs of citizens.
“The residence is unique in its design and orientation, which contribute to its energy-saving features — a hallmark of green buildings.”
He pointed out that, as the first GBI-certified residential high-rise, d’Isabelle represents a transformative leap forward in sustainable, family-centric urban living, setting a benchmark for future developments in the region.
