BINTULU: “The luck of a chicken can be seen in its feet, but the luck of a human is unknown.”
That proverb perfectly describes the extraordinary fortune of Awang Mujahide Aiman Awang Salim, who took home RM10,000 in cash after reeling in a sembilang (catfish) weighing 1.45 kilogrammes (kg) at the 2025 Menanga Vaie Open Fishing Competition, organised by the Bintulu Melanau Association.
Awang Mujahide outperformed hundreds of other anglers, all vying for the championship title.
His “golden” catch was declared the heaviest of the competition, securing him the top prize.
“I never expected this to be my lucky day. Alhamdulillah, this is an unexpected blessing,” he said with a wide grin after receiving the grand prize.
Second place went to Jimbun Gangan, who caught a sembilang weighing 1.13 kg, earning him RM2,000 in cash.
Third and fourth places were claimed by Husaini Bujang and Law Yew Tung, respectively.
They won RM1,000 and RM500, along with fishing equipment.
Prizes were presented by Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming, alongside Bintulu Melanau Association deputy chairman, Turkee Hamzah.
In a brief speech, Turkee expressed hope that the competition would continue to serve as a platform for fostering unity and celebrating local culture.
