KUCHING: The annual Jagannath Ratha Yatra, a vibrant celebration showcasing Sarawak’s rich tapestry of unity and cultural harmony, drew participants from diverse backgrounds in a strong reflection of the state’s commitment to inclusivity and mutual respect.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said the event serves as a reminder of the richness and diversity that make Sarawak unique.
“Sarawak is a land of many cultures, where religions and communities live harmoniously together. Events like this show us the beauty of inclusiveness and mutual respect,” he said during the launch of the 16th Annual Festival of India – Sri Jagannath Ratha Yatra here yesterday.
“They reflect the core values we hold dear as Sarawakians — peace, harmony, and cultural pride,” he added.
Lo also thanked the organiser, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) Kuching, which featured a grand procession dedicated to Lord Jagannath, Lord Baladev, and Goddess Subhadra.

The chariot journey began at 4.30pm and concluded at 7pm, with devotees pulling the chariots through the streets, chanting hymns, and participating in communal prayers.
Following the procession, attendees enjoyed cultural performances including traditional Indian classical dance and ‘kirtan’ musical sessions.
A spiritual discourse by Bhanu Swami Maharaj, a member of ISKCON’s Governing Body Commission and a spiritual master, further enriched the evening.
The Jagannath Ratha Yatra is more than a religious event — it is a celebration of unity in diversity. Devotees from various faiths and cultural backgrounds came together to participate, underscoring the spirit of inclusivity that defines Sarawak.
“Let us continue to build a Sarawak where every faith, every culture, and every community has a voice and a place,” said Lo.
