Another damaged pipeline disrupts Kota Samarahan water supply KUCHING: Water supply in parts of Kota Samarahan has been disrupted due to two pipeline damages caused by contractors working on the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project. Kuching Water Board (KWB) said the most recent incident, a burst 12-inch asbestos cement (AC) main pipeline near Jalan Wan Alwi on July 22, follows a similar incident on July 18 involving a 200-mm ductile iron (DI) main in Desa Ilmu. “These repeated incidents have disrupted water supply and caused low pressure, particularly affecting consumers in the Tabuan Jaya, Samarahan area, and surrounding residential neighbourhoods. “KWB has repeatedly cautioned KUTS contractors to exercise extreme care when carrying out excavation or construction near existing water infrastructure. “Despite these warnings, the recurrence of such incidents reflects a serious lack of vigilance, coordination, and on-site supervision,” it said in a statement. KWB urged KUTS contractors to take full responsibility for the disruptions and implement stronger damage prevention measures during excavation works. The board stressed that such negligence not only disrupts vital public services but also impacts thousands of residents. “KWB appreciates the public’s patience and understanding as restoration efforts are carried out. “We remain committed to minimising disruption and ensuring the continued reliability of the water supply system,” the statement added.
