KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that he will meet with Indonesian President, Prabowo Subianto, this Friday to specifically discuss the proposed ASEAN Power Grid project, which will be based in Sarawak.
Anwar stated that although it is not an official visit, the meeting is significant, as Prabowo has already visited Kuala Lumpur four times to meet with him.
“This Friday, I will meet with President Prabowo Subianto.
“It’s not a working visit either, but since he has come to Kuala Lumpur four times to see me – whether for lunch or dinner, just as friends talking – I feel it is only right for me to visit him this time.
“I’ve already informed the Premier (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) that my main agenda in this meeting with President Prabowo will be to discuss the ASEAN Power Grid project centred in Sarawak for mutual benefit,” he said.
Anwar made these remarks during the 2025 State-Level Gawai Dayak Dinner held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) tonight.
He stressed that Sarawak is also being developed as a major regional energy hub and powerhouse.
“I’ve been engaging with my fellow ASEAN leaders to promote key regional strategies. One of the core priorities under ASEAN is the ASEAN Power Grid – alongside connectivity and digitalisation.
“These are among the main focuses highlighted in the Kuala Lumpur Declaration 2045, which was agreed upon by all ASEAN leaders.
“What does the ASEAN Power Grid mean?
“It reflects a recognition of alternative energy sources such as hydro and gas – flowing from Vietnam into the grid in Kelantan, then down to Johor and into Singapore,” he explained.
Anwar further highlighted that Sarawak’s energy initiatives, leveraging on hydro, gas and blue hydrogen, and particularly the ASEAN Power Grid, are poised to expand beyond Sabah to include Indonesian Kalimantan and even southern Philippines.
