KUCHING: The Sarawak Civil Defence Force (APM) has urged residents to be prepared for the northeast monsoon, warning of heavy rainfall and possible flooding across several parts of the state.

The seasonal weather pattern, which usually begins in late November and lasts until March, brings its heaviest downpours between December and February.

Along with strong winds and rough seas, the monsoon is expected to affect coastal areas of Sarawak, Sabah, and the east coast of the Peninsula, with risks of flooding, landslides, and hazardous sea conditions.

“Residents in flood-prone areas should secure important documents and valuables, store enough clean water for drinking and hygiene, and familiarise themselves with the nearest evacuation and aid centres.

“In addition, they are also encouraged to prepare basic emergency supplies, including power banks, and to be ready to relocate immediately if instructed by authorities,” the agency said.

Sarawak APM assured the public that it will continue monitoring weather developments and stands ready to provide assistance when necessary.

The agency urged everyone to stay alert to updates from official channels and prioritise safety at all times.
