KUCHING: The appointment of a new chairman for Affin Bank will be finalised once the necessary approval is obtained from Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Abang Johari confirmed that a candidate has already been identified for the position.
“We have a candidate, but the appointment must go through the proper procedures and receive approval from Bank Negara Malaysia,” he said.
He told the media this after attending the Rindok Raya 2025 event hosted by the Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA) today.
Abang Johari noted that the Affin Bank board is currently functioning well and described the bank’s overall performance as satisfactory.
He also expressed confidence in the bank’s future, particularly its plans to support development projects in Sarawak.
On a separate note, Abang Johari paid tribute to Malaysia’s fifth Prime Minister, the late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, for his contribution to the state’s development through the establishment of RECODA.

“RECODA is part of the legacy of the late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who proposed the formation of development agencies across the country.
“Among them were the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) for northern Peninsular Malaysia, RECODA for Sarawak, and another similar agency for Sabah,” he added.
The Premier said Sarawak continues to benefit from that initiative, which was launched during Abdullah’s tenure.
During the event, Abang Johari also witnessed the handover of a RM15,000 donation from Pertama Ferroalloys to the Sarawak Orphans Welfare Board (PERYATIM), and later presented duit raya to the orphans.
