KUCHING: The practice of sharing and celebrating festivals of various religions is an important foundation in preserving harmony and unity in Sarawak’s society.
Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kuching Datuk Dr Simon Poh said the open house culture practised by the people of Sarawak has successfully strengthened ties among communities regardless of religion or belief.
“In Sarawak, we are always together in every celebration such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Ramadan, Deepavali, Wesak, Guru Nanak and Christmas.
“The practice of gathering, eating and sharing together not only strengthens relationships, but also serves as a platform to foster harmony, peace and cooperation for the common interest of all Sarawakians,” he said.
He said this when speaking to reporters at the Christmas Open House organised by the Catholic Church at ACCPC St Joseph Church here yesterday (Dec 25) as reported by UKAS.
Poh pointed out that the celebration of Christmas carries a message of peace, harmony and goodwill that must be translated into daily life for the well-being of all.
At the same time, he also called on political and spiritual leaders at the global level to work together in addressing conflicts and to strive towards achieving universal peace.
He added that Sarawak is a state blessed with leadership that emphasises interfaith harmony, enabling followers of all religions to live together peacefully and with mutual respect.
