SERIAN: The Programme Latihan Madani titled “Sustainable Coffee Mastery Responsible Coffee Practices” was successfully conducted from Sept 3 to 7 at Borneo Empurau Farm and Resort, Tarat, Serian.
This five-day training programme was specially designed to empower army veterans from Serian Division with knowledge and practical skills in sustainable coffee farming, aimed at enhancing their income and improving livelihood opportunities.
Organised by the Sarawak Research Society (SRS), this initiative is part of its ongoing commitment to community development and socioeconomic empowerment, particularly among senior citizens and retired servicemen.
The opening ceremony was officiated by Sarawak advisor of Persatuan Veteran Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (PVATM), Datuk Peter Runin, together with Sarawak Research Society chairman Prof Dr Hiram Ting.
In their remarks, both leaders noted the importance of equipping veterans with sustainable agricultural practices, which not only promote economic resilience but also encourage responsible environmental stewardship.
“The success of this programme reflects our strong commitment to ensuring that our veterans remain productive, empowered, and well-prepared to contribute to society through sustainable practices, which is in line with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) Sarawak,” said Prof Ting.
Throughout the programme, participants engaged in hands-on training, expert-led sessions, and field-based practices, covering responsible coffee cultivation, post-harvest processing, and marketing strategies.
By the end of the training, participants expressed their gratitude and confidence that the knowledge and skills gained would enable them to pursue sustainable coffee farming as a viable alternative source of income.
