KUCHING: Sarawak continues to strengthen its arts, culture and creative education ecosystem, recognising their role in driving innovation, fostering social cohesion and enhancing tourism appeal.

This commitment was reflected through the second edition of the Sarawak International Art Camp (SIAC), which brought together local and international artists in a platform designed to promote cultural exchange and creative collaboration.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Commission and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said that SIAC serves as a platform for workshops, discussions, and shared experiences, allowing participants to gain a deeper understanding of each other’s cultures while expanding their artistic perspectives.

“SIAC is more than just an art camp and this year, SIAC proudly welcomes 31 participants from 14 countries, including Malaysia and other international regions.

“Your participation reflects the global recognition and growing impact of SIAC as a meaningful artistic and cultural platform,” he said.

He said this when officiating the Sarawak International Art Camp 2025 (SIAC 2025) closing ceremony and opening ceremony of the Art Exhibition Chung Hua Middle School No 4 at the school today (Dec 15).

He added that he firmly believes the arts are not only a cultural asset, but also a catalyst for innovation, social unity and high-impact tourism.

“Therefore, every effort to nurture young talents, strengthen educational institutions and promote Sarawak as an international arts hub will continue to receive our attention and unwavering support.

“As a representative of the state government and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), I would like to emphasise that the state government and DBKU will always support the advancement of arts, culture and creative education in Sarawak,” he added.

In line with this commitment, he announced that DBKU will organise its first-ever Art Festival next year in conjunction with Pesta Kuching, celebrating the 38th Hari Bandaraya Kuching.

“This festival will further strengthen our city’s creative ecosystem, provide a wider platform for local and international artists, and celebrate Kuching’s identity as a vibrant and culturally rich city,” he said.

Also present were DBKU mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman, Sarawak Artists Society (SAS) president Sebastian Jong, Sarawak Museum Department curator Dr Awangku Shahrir Naqiuddin, acting executive officer of the Sarawak Arts Council Awang Ikman Awg Sapian and Chung Hua Middle School No 4 representative Mok Chin Yaw.
