KUCHING: Asean member states are in the process of aligning their respective domestic implementations, including legal frameworks, before finalising the signing of the Asean Power Grid (APG) memorandum of understanding (MoU).
Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) secretary-general Datuk Mad Zaidi Mohd Karli said this process may take some time, depending on the specific requirements of each country.
However, he is optimistic that the MoU can be signed by the end of October in conjunction with the 43rd Asean Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) to be held in Kuala Lumpur.
“Thankfully, during the Asean Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (SOME) held yesterday, all Asean member states agreed in principle to sign the enhanced APG MoU.
“Each country just needs some time to complete its internal legal and administrative processes before the agreement can be finalised,” he was quoted as saying in a TVS report after chairing the second day of the 43rd SOME.
He explained that although the timeline and internal requirements may vary across countries, the strong commitment shown by member states is encouraging and suggests that the process can be completed within the expected timeframe.
“I believe all countries will be able to ratify the process by October and will be ready to sign the MoU together in Kuala Lumpur.
“Based on the feedback received during the meeting, the response has been very positive,” he added.
