KUCHING: Sarawak continues to draw strong interest from Asean nations, with statistics revealing that over 55 per cent of tourist arrivals to the state in 2024 originated from the region.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said a total of 2.6 million visitors from Asean countries were recorded, making the regional bloc the largest source of international tourists to Sarawak last year.

“As of March this year, Sarawak recorded 581,775 visitor arrivals from Asean countries, with Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia constituting the largest portions, 67 per cent and 28 per cent respectively.,” he said.

He made these remarks during the gala dinner in conjunction with the 33rd Asean Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Council Meeting held at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) Complex on Thursday (Apr 24) evening.

Touching on the 33rd ASCC Council Meeting, Abdul Karim said Asean has always stood for harmony and cooperation as such events like this enable representatives to convene to explore and reaffirm commitment to fostering deeper understanding and continuous collaboration.

He also said the Asean’s 2025 theme of Inclusivity and Sustainability to ensure lasting prosperity and peace for the Asean community resonates with Sarawak’s goals through its green economy initiatives, commitment to indigenous rights, and inclusive development strategies.

“Just as the Sarawak Assembly shelters a diverse population under one roof, Asean unites this region under a common vision, fostering regional unity, and practicing governance for peace and prosperity while protecting Asean’s culture and heritage.

“Sarawak is on the same wavelength as Asean, and actively contribute to the region, proving that environmental stewardship and social unity can go hand in hand.

“During this global trade tension period, we must continue to forge forward together to ensure shared prosperity whilst promoting sustainability,” he said.
