KUCHING: The Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS) has assured the public that the recent outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Mongkos in Serian, is under control.
DVSS director Datuk Dr Adrian Susin confirmed this, saying that ASF poses no risk to humans and pork remains safe for consumption.
“ASF only affects pigs. There is enough pork supply for Christmas, and other districts in Sarawak remain free of the disease,” he told Sarawak Tribune.
He also urged pig farmers to take immediate action to enhance their farm biosecurity measures to prevent further spread of the disease.
The reassurance comes amid concerns following a notification issued by the Samarahan Division Veterinary Services Office on a new positive case of ASF in Serian.
The notice highlighted the potential economic impact on pig farming in Samarahan, given its proximity to the affected area.
The public has been advised to avoid purchasing pork or piglets from unknown sources and to report any sudden deaths or unusual symptoms in pigs to the nearest veterinary office.
ASF, a highly contagious viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs, does not pose a threat to human health but can have devastating effects on the swine industry.
The DVSS has reiterated its commitment to closely monitor the situation and taking necessary measures to contain the outbreak.
Dr Adrian added that further details are expected in an official statement from the department later today.
