Asfia takes oath for 10th term as Sarawak DUN Speaker

KUCHING: Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar took the oath of office as the Speaker of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) for the tenth term, effective from Nov 16, 2025 until Nov 15, 2027.

The swearing-in ceremony was conducted before Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar in an official ceremony at the Astana Negeri Sarawak, here today (Nov 18).

The ceremony was also attended by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Premiers, members of the State Cabinet, the Sarawak State Secretary, the Deputy Speaker of the DUN, as well as heads of departments and senior state government officials.

This appointment further cements Mohamad Asfia’s position as the longest-serving Speaker in Malaysia, having first assumed the role on Nov 15, 2000.

His more than two decades of continuous service make him one of the most experienced legislative figures in the nation’s administrative history.

Professionally, Mohamad Asfia holds a Bachelor of Laws from Leeds University, England, and is a Barrister-at-Law of the Inner Temple, London. He also holds a postgraduate qualification in Port and Shipping Management from the University of Wales, Cardiff.

He began his career as legal adviser to the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (1974–1976), before practising as an Advocate and Solicitor from 1976 to 2000.

He has also held key roles in the corporate and media sectors, including serving as Chairman of Interfinance Berhad (1980–1991) and Editor-in-Chief of The Sarawak Tribune (1990–2000).

In the state’s political and administrative sphere, he previously served as state assemblyman for Kuala Rajang and Serdeng/Semop, and was the Deputy Speaker of the Sarawak DUN (1995–2000) prior to his appointment as Speaker.

Since 2002, he has also held the positions of Permanent Chairman of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) and Chairman of the PBB Constitution Committee.

The renewal of his appointment for the tenth term reflects the state government’s confidence in his leadership, extensive experience, and unwavering commitment to guiding Sarawak’s highest legislative institution.
