KUCHING: Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar will not preside over a motion on Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei during the sitting tomorrow.
“I want to make this clear, I will not preside over that (the case) as the allegations are against me,” he told the press at Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu Headquarters here yesterday.
He was responding to a question from the press following the fallout between the two after the Padungan assemblyman called for Asfia’s removal as Speaker during the last DUN sitting.
Asfia revealed that Deputy Speaker Datuk Gerawat Gala would be presiding over the matter.
“Just like in the Committee of Privileges, I am the chairman but I did not sit there.I was not present at the hearing of the Committee of Privileges, it was chaired by the Deputy Speaker,” he said.
Asked whether any decisions had been made on the case, he responded by saying that it would be up for the State Legislative Assemby to decide.
“First, you have the Committee of Privileges which is an investigative body. The reason the body investigates is because he was referred,” he said.
“This report will be tabled, debated with Wong and he will be given the chance to speak, address and defend himself if need be. Whatever the recommendation, it will be put to the DUN again,” explained Asfia.
He pointed out that neither the Speaker nor the chairman nor the members of committee of privileges would be deciding.
“It’s DUN that decides,” said Asfia.
