KUCHING: Asia Rugby Chief Executive Officer, Benjamin van Rooyen, praised the Sarawak Rugby Union (SRU) for its initiative in bringing Asia Rugby to Kuching, describing the collaboration as a strong example of partnership between Malaysia Rugby and the global rugby community.

He said Sarawak’s effort in hosting this week’s Malaysia Rugby Technical and Education Seminar and the Asia Rugby Annual General Meeting (AGM) reflects the state’s growing influence in regional rugby development.

“Rugby in Malaysia has been a major partner for us in Asia Rugby, especially in hosting tournaments in Kuala Lumpur and Johor.

“So, I just need to give you background in terms of my love for East Malaysia. This is one of the places where I can easily see myself retire and live here forever.

“So, what’s good about the fact that Sarawak Rugby has invited us?

Participants of the Match Official course receive lessons from Sarawak Rugby Head of Referees, Azhfar Nor Abdul Rahman.

“So, I need to start off by saying (to) Sarawak Rugby, thank you very much for working through Malaysia Rugby to organise this,” said van Rooyen.

He told Sarawak Tribune in an interview recently that when news of the Kuching event was first announced, many delegates from across Asia were eager to learn more about the destination.

“When we first heard that we were coming to Sarawak, there was a lot of excitement. I knew where we were going, but for many of our Asian delegates, they had to Google where Sarawak and Kuching were,” he said.

Van Rooyen added that Asia Rugby’s presence in Sarawak strengthens its message of inclusion and support for all member unions, not just those based in major cities.

“It shows that we’re not only going to the capitals. It’s about recognising and supporting local unions like Sarawak Rugby, who are building from the ground up and empowering their regional unions,” he said.

He also expressed his admiration for the high level of participation and enthusiasm at the ongoing World Rugby-accredited courses, which include Level 1 certifications in 15s and 7s coaching, match officiating, and First Aid in Rugby (FAIR).

“I was surprised by the eagerness of the participants – teachers, community coaches, and volunteers.

“They are here for a long week of learning, and they will go home with not just certificates, but real rugby knowledge,” he said.

Van Rooyen, who has been with Asia Rugby for a decade, said events like these are essential to ensuring long-term growth and sustainability across Asia.

Malaysia Rugby Technical and Education Seminar features Level 1 courses in 15s and 7s coaching, match officiating, and FAIR which will be held until Sunday (November 9).
