BAU: An aspiring teacher of mixed Berawan-Bidayuh descent, Joana Jane Francis, was crowned Miss Tasik Biru 2025, winning hearts with her charm, eloquence and commitment to education.
Her victory not only marked a personal milestone but also symbolised the hopes of a younger generation passionate about preserving culture while shaping the future.
The 22-year-old teacher-to-be, from Kampung Stenggang here, not only showcased the rich tapestry of Sarawak’s indigenous identities but also brought into focus the role of empowered young women in shaping the future through education.
“What I want to do after winning this title is to promote my own hometown and heritage that I am proud of. This is where I grew up at and it is where my family and I share many memories together.
“I am truly thankful to the judges as well as the beloved people of Bau and my supporters, this is such an honour to me,” said Joana, who is pursuing a TESL degree at one of the higher learning institutions.
She took home RM3,000 in prize money, a crown, trophy, sash, a certificate of appreciation, bouquet of flowers and vouchers from sponsors.
The ‘Miss Tasik Biru 2025’ pageant burst to life in a kaleidoscope of colours, drumbeats, and laughter as the town came together for a night steeped in tradition and celebration.
Set against the picturesque backdrop of Tasik Biru, the event blended pageantry with cultural pride, featuring traditional dances, ethnic music, and vibrant costumes that celebrated the rich heritage of the locals, and other indigenous communities.

During the pageantry, nine contestants vied for the title ‘Miss Tasik Biru 2025’, namely, Axiomara Tijan; Faleysia Harry; Mathilda Valentia; Noradilla Kavin; Gillian Octavya; Melcy James; Melanie Melvy Betong; and Joana Jane Francis, and Shannelle Ellyssa Justine.
On Friday, May 16, nine contestants also participated in the ‘Miss Talent Tasik Biru 2025’, where Faleysia Harry, won the title.
For ‘Miss Tasik Biru 2025’, the first runner-up spot went to Melanie Melvy Betong, while third placing went to Shannelle Ellyssa Justine, who brought home RM2,000 and RM1,000 in prize money respectively, a crown, trophy, sash, a certificate of appreciation, bouquet of flowers, and vouchers from sponsors.
Fourth and fifth placing went to Noradilla Kavin and Melcy James, who received a trophy, cash, and certificate of appreciation.
Meanwhile, the other contestants, namely Axiomara Tijan, Falesyia Harry, Mathilda Valentia Yaya, and Gillian Octavyia Vincent, received consolation prizes and certificates of appreciation.
Subsidiary titles were won by Faleysia Harry (Best Talent); Shannelle Ellyssa Justine (Best Video); Noradila Kavin (Best Evening Gown); Melcy James (Miss Photogenic); Gillian Octavya Vincent (Best Catwalk); Mathilda Valentia Yaya (Miss Congeniality); Joana Jane Francis (Best Skin) and Axiomara Tijan (Miss Popular).
The guest-of-honour at the pageant was Datin Christina Esni Mied, wife of Deputy Transport Minister, Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, who is also Tasik Biru assemblyman.
