KUCHING: The newly appointed Assistant District Scout Commissioners of the Petra Jaya District have been reminded of the heavy responsibility they carry in shaping the next generation of leaders and revitalising the local scouting movement.

Chief Scout Commissioner, John Lim Boon Beng, said the appointment certificate handed over are not merely an official document, but a symbol of trust and commitment to the youth, who are eager for leadership, guidance and inspiration.

“You are not appointed to guard a title, but to build a legacy,” he said in a text speech read by  by Deputy Chief Commissioner, Ngatiman Sarepin, during the installation ceremony held at the Sarawak Scout Headquarters on Friday.

Lim also raised concerns over the current membership renewal progress for 2025 in Petra Jaya District, revealing that only seven out of 40 registered school scout troops had completed the process as of May 15.

He called this a “wake-up number”, urging the newly appointed Assistant District Commissioners to collaborate closely with school scouters to expedite membership renewal to enable the scouts to participate in several upcoming programmes and activities planned.

“Our youth need access to the unique training Scouting offers such as training that lays the foundation for future careers, whether in aviation through Air Scouts or in maritime fields through Sea Scouts,” he stressed.

He further called on all District Commissioners to take seriously the establishment and strengthening of the District Scout Councils (Majlis Pengakap Daerah), which he described as essential partners in sourcing funds and ensuring sustainable programme implementation.

While commending Petra Jaya’s planning of seven activities involving Cub Scouts, Junior Scouts and Senior Scouts, Lim reminded the leaders that plans without execution are just dreams.

“Assistant District Commissioner is not just a title; it is a calling. A calling of service, of sharp thinking, and firm leadership.

“Petra Jaya Scouts don’t just need leaders; they need game changers,” he added.

Calling 2025 the year of “Scouting resurgence” for Petra Jaya, he challenged the new leaders to rekindle school-based Scouting activities, reconnect with past members, and breathe new life into programmes that shape the identity and character of youth.

“I want you to become leaders who do not wait for instructions, but leaders who pave the way. Not just following the current, but creating the wave.

“Forge ahead without fear. Serve tirelessly. Excel always – for Scouting and for beloved Sarawak,” he said.
