SIBU: The Sibu Drug Merchants Association (SDMA) has put forward a recommendation for the Sarawak government to consider offering broader Chinese medicine services in government hospitals.

SDMA chairman Ting Ka Hua proposed an extended range of services, including Chinese medicine consultations, dispensing, cancer rehabilitation, massage, acupuncture, as well as scraping and cupping treatments.

“Such an expansion will not only provide enhanced outlets for qualified traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioners, including Chinese physicians in Sarawak, but also contribute positively to the overall health of Sarawak’s residents,” he said.

“Currently, within Malaysia’s 15 government hospitals, including Sarawak General Hospital, traditional medical services are limited to acupuncture and massage, requiring referrals from Western medicine practitioners, and precluding the use of Chinese medicine.

“Chinese medicine holds exceptional efficacy and offers distinct benefits in managing both chronic and acute ailments,” he said during the dinner marking SDMA’s 70th anniversary yesterday (Aug 6).

Ting affirmed that through its affiliation with the Malaysian Chinese Medical Association (MCMA), SDMA would persist in enhancing communication and cooperation with government and health ministry bodies. This proactive collaboration aims to actively participate in policy formulation and provide robust support for industry development.

Simultaneously, he emphasised SDMA’s commitment to bolstering the professionalism and management capabilities of its members. Through diverse training and exchange initiatives, SDMA aims to provide members with increased developmental prospects and resources. These endeavours are designed not only to bolster members’ business growth but also to establish a favourable reputation within the pharmaceutical industry.

Reflecting on SDMA’s 70-year journey, Ting underscored the association’s evolution into a significant entity within the Malaysian pharmaceutical community, attributing this achievement to the collective contributions of past directors and members. He highlighted SDMA’s role in promoting local pharmaceutical companies and safeguarding members’ rights.

Ting acknowledged the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the era of digitisation and globalisation. He emphasised the importance of adaptability, innovation, and sustained competitiveness.

Ting expressed his belief that with unity and collaborative efforts, SDMA would continue to excel in the competitive landscape and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the pharmaceutical industry.

Ting extended heartfelt appreciation to all individuals from various walks of life who have supported the association’s development, enabling it to thrive to this day. He also thanked all members for their dedication and support, government departments and relevant institutions for their cooperation, and consumers for their trust and backing.

Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, also the Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, graced the event as the guest of honour. Noteworthy attendees included Xing Weiping, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching; Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek and Sibu MP Oscar Ling Chai Yew.
