SIBU: The Sibu Buddhist Association (SBA) has once again rallied behind children with cancer by hosting a GoBald 2025 satellite shave event, following their last participation in GoBald 2023.

GoBald is the flagship awareness and fundraising campaign of the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS), aimed at raising funds to support children and families affected by childhood cancer across Sarawak.

On Sunday afternoon (Sept 21), a total of 30 members of the association shaved their heads at the SBA’s premises, collectively raising RM22,526.77.

Their contribution will help ensure that children fighting cancer receive comprehensive treatment, care, and support to improve treatment outcomes.

SCCS president Mary Kiu, said the society is deeply touched by the generosity and compassion shown by the SBA.

“Their continued support is a great reminder to our children and families that they are not alone in this journey. Every shaved head is a symbol of solidarity and love, and every ringgit raised helps us sustain the critical services that make a real difference in the lives of children with cancer.” she stated.

According to her, SCCS requires over RM2 million annually to sustain its essential services, supporting more than 150 families each year.

Last year, she said SCCS spent over RM1.9 million on medical aid alone — the highest in its history — driven by a surge in specialised treatment needs.

Pointing out that SCCS expects these costs to continue rising, she said the services include providing medical and financial aid to families in need, offering accommodation, food, and transportation at the Kuching halfway home for rural families undergoing active treatment, organising counselling sessions and recreational activities for children and families, sponsoring medical equipment not available in government hospitals, distributing care packs and tokens of love to help new patients adapt to life in the ward.

The GoBald 2025 campaign aims to raise RM1 million and shave 400 heads in solidarity with children battling cancer, Kiu said, adding, since its founding in 2001, SCCS has supported over 1,700 families across Sarawak, made possible by the generosity of donors, partners, and community organisations.
