WASHINGTON: At least 16 residents of New York have lost their lives amid extreme cold temperatures, city mayor Zohran Mamdani said on Monday, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
On Sunday, Mamdani said that 14 people died in New York.
“As of this morning, 16 of our fellow New Yorkers have passed away outside during this brutal stretch of cold,” Mamdani told reporters.
The mayor added that hypothermia appears to have played a role in 13 of these cases, while three residents died from drug overdoses.
According to reports, the snowstorm raging across the United States (US) has affected over 200 million people, with the death toll exceeding 100.
Moreover, thousands of flights have been cancelled across the country, and icy conditions on US roads have led to an increase in accidents. – BERNAMA-SPUTNIK/RIA NOVOSTI
