THE Sarawak government is collaborating with Bank Negara Malaysia to roll out an initiative to provide Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and Cash Recycler Machines (CRMs) at District Offices and Sub-District Offices across Sarawak, particularly in areas that still lack banking services.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala said the initiative is part of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), with the Balingian Sub-District Office among those to benefit.

“The first phase, which covers 19 District and Sub-District Offices, has already been completed, and the second phase will extend the services to more areas under the 13MP,” he said when responding to Abdul Yakub Arbi (GPS–Balingian) in the DUN today.

Earlier, Abdul Yakub lamented on the lack of banking facilities that forced the people of Balingian to travel to Mukah or Bintulu for financial transactions.

To ensure successful implementation, Gerawat said certain criteria must be met before approval for ATM and CRM installations.

He said these machines must be placed within District Offices or Sub-District Offices as part of the Sarawak government’s services.

“The office buildings must be in good condition, secure, and have the necessary telecommunications utilities.

“Additionally, the area must have proper road access to ensure safe and secure replenishment of cash for the ATMs and CRMs,” he added.
