KUALA LUMPUR: The deadline to reinstate medical and health insurance/takaful (MHIT) policies without a waiting period has been extended to Aug 31, 2025, from the earlier cutoff of June 30.

In a joint statement, the Life Insurance Association of Malaysia (LIAM), Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA) and Persatuan Insurans Am Malaysia (PIAM) said no new medical exams or health declarations are required, making it easier for affected policyholders to resume coverage.

The extension provides added flexibility for those who surrendered or allowed their policies to lapse in 2024 due to premium or contribution hikes under the MHIT repricing exercise.

It follows a special reinstatement arrangement announced in December 2024, which allows eligible policyholders to revive their original coverage without additional underwriting.

“This ensures no one is left behind—particularly those in rural or digitally underserved communities,” the associations said, noting that MHIT remains a critical safety net amid ongoing economic uncertainty.

Policyholders are encouraged to contact their insurers or takaful providers to initiate reinstatement before the new deadline. – BERNAMA
