Driver and passengers escape bus fire

SIBU: A bus driver and two passengers had a close shave this morning – they escaped from being burned alive after the bus they were on, burst into flames. The incident happened at Jalan Rantau Panjang here at 8.45am today (April 2). A spokesman for the State Fire Department operations centre said firemen from Sungai Merah were despatched to the scene but when they arrived at the scene they were met with the skeletal remains of the bus.    The bus driver and two passengers managed to get out to safety. “The bus driver claimed that the fire started from the engine compartment and spread to the rest of the vehicle,” the spokesman said. In Simunjan, a paddy storehouse in Kampung Sungai Apin, Simunjan, was razed to the ground around 11.45am today. Firemen from Simunjan extinguishing the flames. No casualties were reported. And in Miri, some generators and oil tanks caught fire at Jalan Desa Senadin around 7.55am. The fire, believed to have started from welding works, was put out by firemen from Lopeng fire station.

Foreign workers escape quarters fire

DARO: Sixteen foreign plantation workers had a rude awakening when their quarters at Ladang Tutus, caught fire in the wee hours today (April 2). Upon receiving an emergency call at 1.49am, firemen from Daro had to take a 45km journey to the scene. By the time they arrived, the flames had already destroyed the seven-unit workers quarters. The Indonesian plantation workers managed to get out to safety before the fire engulfed their quarters. One of them sustained minor burns to the arm and was taken to Daro Hospital for treatment. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

Soldier in m-bike convoy dies after crash

KUCHING: A soldier travelling in a motorcycle convoy from Pasir Pandak was killed after his vehicle was involved in a crash last Wednesday (March 31). The accident occurred on a stretch of Jalan Keruing around 9.40pm. “Investigations showed that the victim, Muhamad Amirul Firdaus Che Bashah, 24, had crashed into the back of his friend’s motorcycle. “Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene,” Sarawak Traffic Police chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said, adding that the victim’s body was taken to the SGH Forensic Department for further action. The victim’s friend, also aged 24, suffered injuries and is now stable after receiving treatment at the hospital. Alexson said the victim and his friends were heading back to their Kota Samarahan Air Force Base camp when the unfortunate incident occurred. The case is currently being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Tribunal to issue judgement at later date
