KUCHING: The authorities may take action if a report is lodged against former law minister, Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, over remarks on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and Sarawak and Sabah.

Home Minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution, said such comments could affect relations between Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.

Describing Zaid as a former leader who had passed his prime, he stressed that there is no reason to cause unease while the government focuses on fulfilling agreed commitments.

He said the government’s commitment to the MA63 is demonstrated through the appointment of Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof, to chair discussions between the federal government and Sabah and Sarawak on implementing the agreement.

“Much progress has been made. The government’s commitment to the agreement must be assessed based on the implementation of what has been agreed.

“Our focus is on what has yet to be fulfilled and the obstacles that need to be overcome,” he told reporters at the MADANI Village project handover ceremony at Kampung Sindang Baru Samarahan today.

On possible action against Zaid, he said the authorities are awaiting reports.

“When a report is lodged, we will examine it under the relevant Act and section. Until then, no further comment will be made,” he added.

Zaid was recently quoted as questioning the MA63’s relevance and labelling Sarawak and Sabah as burdens to the federation.
