MARUDI: Flood monitoring operations were carried out early this morning in Marudi following a steady rise in river water levels caused by a combination of king tides and continuous heavy rainfall since Sept 5.
The Civil Defence Force (APM) confirmed that a two-man team from the Marudi Civil Defence Volunteers (ASPA), led by Corporal (PA) Bohari Bujang, conducted checks in affected areas at around 6.30 am.
Using a private boat, safety equipment and water gauges, they recorded water levels of 3.9 feet at SK Benawa and 4.2 feet at Kampung Benawa.
The monitoring mission was completed at 7.20 am and the situation has been described as under control, with no evacuation centres opened.
However, authorities noted that water levels are still on the rise, with cloudy weather conditions persisting.
Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to remain vigilant and relocate should their safety be at risk.
“The public is reminded to monitor water level trends closely and to be prepared to move if conditions worsen,” said Marudi District Civil Defence Officer Lieutenant (PA) Mirwan Shah Masri in a statement.
For now, no injuries or major disruptions have been reported, but the Civil Defence Force continues to keep the situation under close observation.
