VIENNA, Austria: Three people were killed after dozens of avalanches swept through the country’s western mountains, according to Austrian police, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

Among them is a German skier, a spokeswoman for the police in Tyrol said on Wednesday.

The winter sportsman was travelling with another man in Tyrol’s Navistal valley. They had turned back because of avalanche risks, but a slab of snow broke loose as they crossed a slope, the spokeswoman said.

In the Tyrol alone, more than 30 avalanches were recorded in one day, according to the state’s emergency call centre.

Police also reported another avalanche death in Fiss. The 71-year-old victim was holidaying in Tyrol, but no further details were released.

A man was also killed in an avalanche in the province of Vorarlberg. The APA news agency said he was dug out of the snow but died at the scene in the Sonnenkopf ski area.

Several avalanches were also reported in the province of Salzburg, where a 70-year-old ski tourer was pulled from the snow.

The situation in western Austria remains critical, with warning services issuing the second-highest danger level for Tyrol and Vorarlberg. – BERNAMA-dpa
