MIRI: Eleven-month-old Rhea Moh Ning Xuan from here faces a critical race against time to raise another RM55,000 for a cochlear implant surgery that could restore her hearing and enable her to develop essential speech and language skills.

Doctors have advised that the procedure must be done before she turns two for the best chance of success, said Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries, and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew.

Rhea’s parents, Moh Nien Chiong, a store manager, and Janet Teng Ling Sieng, a manicurist, have already gathered RM70,000.

However, they are still short of the RM125,000 required for the surgery, Ting explained during a meeting with the family at the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Piasau office today.

The Miri Cochlear Implant Association has stepped in to assist the family by launching a fundraising campaign.

“The surgery is critical to help baby Rhea lead a normal life,” said Ting, who is also the Piasau assemblyman.

He urged the public to contribute generously, emphasising the life-changing impact the procedure could have.

Contributions can be made to the Sehati Service & Information Centre (Alliance Bank: 110270010015028).

According to Ting, the association has successfully supported other children in similar circumstances, enabling them to live and learn like their peers, adding. “Early intervention is key,”
