KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian shuttlers maintained their fine run in the Badminton Asia Junior Championships as they saw off South Korea 2-0 in Group D of the team event in Yatsushiro City, Japan, today (June 27).

The national squad won both sets 55-32, 55-28, using a new relay scoring format in the tournament held in Yatsushiro City General Gymnasium.

In the first set of the boys’ doubles, Isyraf Hafizin-Ahmad Redzuan put Malaysia up front as they edged Kim Tae Hyun-Lee Min Jae 11-10, followed by another victory from girls’ singles shuttler Carine Tee, who overcame Kwom Min Gyo, making it 22-19, while girls’ doubles Genevie Lim-Low Zi Yu recorded a third win for Malaysia, defeating Kim Han Bi-Min Gyo, taking the score to 33-24.

Ahmad then teamed up with Zi Yu in the fourth match to extend the lead for Malaysia as they triumphed against Min Jae-Yeo Seo Young 44-31 in mixed doubles before Kong Wei Xiang sealed the opening set against Jeong Da Hwan in boys’ singles, making it 55-32.

Malaysia continued their perfect run as boys’ doubles duo Damien Ling-Irfan Shazmir thumped Tae Hyun-Min Jae, 11-3, before Carine once again proved her mettle by beating Min Gyo in the girls’ singles to make it 22-9.

Genevie-Zi Yu widened the gap for Malaysia to 33-14, after they came out tops against Han Bi-Min Gyo in the girls’ doubles, while Ahmad-Zi Yu got the better of Min Jae-Seo Young in the mixed doubles to make it 44-22.

Wei Xiang turned hero for Malaysia in the boys’ singles as he wrapped up the tie against Da Hwan to give Malaysia a 55-28 victory.

Yesterday, Malaysia opened their campaign by defeating Macau 55-16, 55-31.

Only the top two teams from each group progress to the quarter-finals.

The competition is being played using a new relay scoring format, with each tie decided over the best of three 55-point sets.

Each set consists of one match in all five disciplines, with the cumulative score carried forward from one match to the next until either side reaches 55 points.

The BAJC 2026 team event, which kicked off yesterday (June 26), will be held until June 30. — BERNAMA
