KUCHING: The wife of Head of State Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, attended the Songket Flower Handicraft Class organised by the Malaysian Armed Forces Family Welfare Body (BAKAT) under the Eastern Field Command of the Malaysian Army, held at the Astana Negeri Sarawak.

Fauziah was welcomed by vice chairperson 2 of the BAKAT Army Council Datin Erni Irawati Rosli and chairperson of BAKAT 1st Division Datin Roslina Abu Bakar.

The Songket Flower Handicraft Class was held on Thursday to provide exposure and skills to participants in the making of bunga songket (songket flowers), a traditional craft that is intricate and highly valued.

The programme also aimed to nurture interest and encourage active participation in handicraft activities among the attendees.

Fauziah spent time observing the demonstration of the songket flower-making process and participated in learning the craft herself, guided by instructors Shazwenatul Anira Kamaruzzaman and Suhana Wahap, who led the class throughout the session.

She expressed her appreciation to BAKAT for organising such a meaningful programme, which not only helps develop the members’ skills but is also crucial in preserving and passing down local traditional handicraft heritage.

Fauziah hoped that such programmes will continue to be held from time to time as a platform to strengthen bonds, nurture interest in traditional arts, and empower the role of women in society.
