MIRI: Members of the public who are going back to their hometown for Chinese New Year are advised to fill in the ‘balik kampung’ forms or better yet, download the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) app.

This is so that the police can patrol and monitor their residential areas, says Sarawak Commissioner of Police (CP) Datuk Ramli Din.

During last year’s Christmas celebration, police received a total of 128 ‘balik kampung’ forms statewide.

“I would like to stress here that none of these (128) houses were broken into,” he said.

Ramli was met by the media after launching ‘Ops Selamat Chinese New Year 2020’ at a shopping mall in Jalan Post here.

Meanwhile, a total of 56 traffic accident hotspots have been identified statewide, he said.

“To improve traffic safety, especially in these hotspots, for this coming Ops Selamat Chinese New Year 2020, a total of 850 police personnel would be involved during the 15-day operation, which will begin on Jan 16 (today).”

In Miri, four accident-prone locations have been listed ― two Jalan Persekutuan (federal roads) and two Jalan Negeri (state roads).

The four hotspots are from KM14 to KM22, Jalan Miri-Bintulu (Jalan Persekutuan); KM30 to KM 39; KM44 to KM52, Jalan Negeri; Miri Coastal Road and Jalan Airport Miri.

During the event, a discount of 50 per cent was offered for traffic summonses.

Nearly 10 exhibition booths were set up in conjunction with the event.

Ramli also handed out free helmets to motorcyclists along Jalan Post here ― nearly 100 helmets were given out.

Also present yesterday were Ramli’s deputy DCP Datuk Dev Kumar M M Sree, Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu, Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah and Mayor Adam Yii.
