KUCHING: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has appointed former national shuttler, Chang Kim Wai, as the men’s doubles assistant coach.

He will work alongside head coach Herry IP and coach Miftakh under the leadership of BAM doubles director Rexy Mainaky, as part of efforts to strengthen Malaysia’s men’s doubles department.

“We are pleased to welcome Kim Wai into our coaching team.

“His proven track record and deep understanding of doubles play make him a solid addition to the setup under coach Herry. We believe this combination will help our pairs reach greater heights,” said Rexy in a BAM statement today.

A former national player from Perak, the 49-year-old was among Malaysia’s leading men’s doubles shuttlers in the early 2000s, winning silver at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, bronze at the 2002 Asian Games and helping Malaysia secure silver at the 2002 Thomas Cup.

In his new role, Kim Wai will assist in planning and executing high-performance training programmes aimed at enhancing tactical awareness, partnership synergy, and consistency among elite and upcoming men’s doubles pairs.

Expressing gratitude, the men’s doubles legend said he was honoured to serve Malaysian badminton once again and looked forward to working closely with the coaching team “to achieve greater success for the country.”
