Ban on cooking at 5-foot ways effective Jan, 2018

KUCHING: With effect from January 2018, Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) will enforce the prohibtion on cooking or food preparation at five-foot ways in accordance with Article 26 (2)(a) of the Local Authorities (Cleanliness) by-Laws, 1999 where such activities are totally prohibited from being conducted without the approval of the Local Authorities (PBT).

The five-foot ways are only allowed to be used for placing chairs and tables which have received the approval and permit from DBKU only.

The purpose of the enforcement of the prohibtion is to ensure cleanliness of the area and surrounding premises and food safety is always at its best. Besides, the prohibtion is also to guarantee the safety of users of the five-foot ways.

Anyone who defies the order is liable to a fine of RM1,500 for the first time and RM3,000 thereafter and also liable to a jail term of nine months or both upon conviction. Hence, premises owner or eatery operators will be given three months notice to abide by the order to ensure that there is no more cooking and food preparing activities conducted at the five-foot ways.
