PUTRAJAYA: The Immigration Department (JIM) arrested a Bangladeshi man in Kuantan, Pahang, to assist investigations into a viral social media post alleging that he was in possession of both a Malaysian International Passport (PMA) and a Bangladeshi passport.

In a statement today, Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said the man was detained by a team of six JIM officers at a container located along Jalan Kuantan-Bandar Damansara at 6.30 pm arrest yesterday, following intelligence gathered by the department.

“Further inspection uncovered two Malaysian international passports that had expired on April 25, 2017 and Oct 25, 2022, respectively, as well as a Seaman’s Service Book belonging to a Malaysian citizen,” he said.

The suspect was subsequently taken to the Kuantan Immigration Office to facilitate further investigations, including to identify the rightful owner of the two Malaysian International Passports and the Seaman’s Service Book.

“This includes determining whether there are elements of unauthorised possession, misuse of travel documents or any other offences under the relevant laws,” he said.

Zakaria stressed that the department viewed all allegations involving the misuse or unlawful possession of Malaysian travel documents seriously.

He also urged the public to refrain from making any speculation until investigations are completed.

“Should there be any breach of the law, stern action will be taken in accordance with the relevant legal provisions,” he said. – BERNAMA
