KUCHING: The launch of AFFIN Bank’s Batu Kawa branch reflects growing confidence in Sarawak’s economic direction and plays a role in advancing the state’s nation-building agenda.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the expansion of financial institutions in the state is aligned with Sarawak’s push for economic growth, digitalisation and sustainable investments.
“This is not just a branch opening. It is part of Sarawak nation-building — a responsibility, a duty and a movement,” he said when officiating at the launch of the AFFIN Bank Batu Kawa branch here today.
Dr Sim noted that Sarawak’s position has shifted significantly over the past decade, with increasing expectations from across Malaysia.
He also highlighted the rapid development of Batu Kawa, noting that continued traffic congestion reflects increased economic activity and population growth in the area, supporting the bank’s expansion.
Dr Sim commended AFFIN Bank’s growth from six to 13 branches within a short period, describing it as a timely move in line with Sarawak’s growth momentum.

The Deputy Premier also acknowledged the bank’s initiatives, including rural outreach via the Mobile Financial Centre (MFC2) and youth-focused digital platforms such as FINTURA.
“I am thankful for the introduction of digital and mobile platforms, but I also hope to see more education for our young people on money matters and investments, so they can achieve financial independence,” he said.
Meanwhile, Affin Islamic Bank Berhad chief executive officer, Datuk Paduka Syed Mashafuddin Syed Badarudin emphasised that the expansion is a testament to the bank’s brand promise, “Always About You.”
“Batu Kawa is a growing township with strong community and business potential.
“AFFIN is committed to be present where people live, where businesses grow, and where new opportunities are taking shape,” Syed Mashafuddin said in his welcome address.
He added that the branch serves as a bridge between physical accessibility and the group’s digital ambitions, ensuring that banking remains inclusive for all Sarawakians.
The launch follows the group’s 50th-anniversary milestone celebrated last year, signalling a “renewed momentum” for the institution.
Also present at the ceremony were Mayor of Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Datuk Wee Hong Seng and other AFFIN senior officials.
