SARIKEI: The pre-launch ceremony for the Batang Rajang Bridge, which was initially scheduled for Mar 28, has been brought forward to Mar 27, according to the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR).
The bridge, part of the Pasi-Sibu/Tanjung Manis road, is set to open temporarily, easing travel for residents in Tanjung Manis, Pulau Bruit, Sarikei, Daro, and Matu ahead of Aidilfitri.
Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh previously said that the state PWD and the contractor have agreed to the temporary opening to facilitate ‘balik kampung’ travel.
He noted that while some road sections still require upgrading, the overall project is in good condition.
With this opening, travel from Sarikei to Tanjung Manis will take only 45 minutes, compared to two to three hours via Sibu.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas who is also the Infrastructure and Port Development minister will officiate the pre-launch event.
