KUCHING: The much-anticipated Batang Saribas Bridge 1 is just days away from opening, according to Public Works Department (PWD) Sarawak Director, Dr Cassidy Morris.
In a brief update shared via his Facebook page, Cassidy described the bridge as “another new baby”, signalling its readiness after years of construction.
“A few more days to go for bridge opening,” he wrote.
Spanning 1.55 kilometres and costing RM375.5 million, the bridge is a key component of the Sarawak Coastal Road Project.
It aims to improve connectivity along the coast by replacing ferry services and linking rural communities to essential services such as schools and hospitals.
Scheduled for completion in March 2025, construction of the bridge progressed ahead of schedule.
As of January 2025, work was already 91.12 per cent complete, surpassing the targeted 90.02 per cent at that timeline.
Despite facing technical challenges, including unstable land conditions that required advanced engineering solutions, the project is now nearing completion and is expected to boost economic activity and improve accessibility for local residents.
