KUCHING: Batik Air has expanded its East Malaysia network with the launch of its inaugural direct flight between Kota Kinabalu and Kuching on Monday (Dec 15).

The new service, operating daily, arrived at Kuching International Airport at 6.20pm, offering business and leisure travellers with a faster alternative to long land journeys or indirect flights.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Dr Jerip Susil said the launch reflects the state’s continued commitment to strengthening air connectivity through close collaboration between state and federal agencies, as well as airline partners.

“The route, operating 11 times weekly, marks a strategic milestone in enhancing direct connectivity between Sarawak and Sabah.

“With 120 arriving and 120 departing passengers on the inaugural flight, the response reflects strong demand and market confidence,” he said at a press conference after welcoming passengers here, representing Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.

Jerip added that the ministry appreciates Batik Air’s confidence in Sarawak’s aviation market and its continued expansion in East Malaysia.

“This service strengthens Batik Air’s role in supporting regional mobility and economic connectivity.

“With Batik Air joining Firefly and AirAsia, travellers now enjoy greater choice and flexibility between Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.

“Direct connectivity offers a more efficient alternative to long land journeys or indirect flights, benefiting businesses, institutions, tourists and communities while strengthening inter-state economic linkages,” he added.

With Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM26) approaching, Jerip said enhanced Sarawak–Sabah connectivity is both timely and strategic.

“Improved access will encourage multi-destination travel within Sarawak through direct and indirect connections via Kota Kinabalu.

“These efforts align with the state’s vision to position Kuching as a key regional aviation hub, supported by network expansion and future airport development planning,” he said.
