SIBU: A bush fire covering more than 16 hectares broke out along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman here, with firefighting operations continuing into the second day on Saturday (Mar 28).
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the fire, reported at about 8 am on Friday, involved an area behind the Ngu Chung Beng driving institute.
On the first day, firefighters managed to contain about one hectare of the affected area before suspending operations at 5 pm.
Operations resumed on Saturday, with the affected area increasing slightly to 16.4 hectares.
Bomba spokesperson said the firefighting efforts were divided into two sectors, Zone A and Zone B, involving multiple agencies.
The teams deployed hose lines and portable pumps, drawing water from nearby open sources to contain the blaze.

A total of 12 firefighters, assisted by agencies including Civil Defence Force, Malaysia Armed Forces, police, and Sarawak Energy, are involved in the operation.
No casualties have been reported.
At press time, the firefighting operation is ongoing.
