KUCHING: Batu Kawa today stands as proof that when the community unites and works together, great achievements can be realised.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, said that ongoing development not only beautifies the area but also ensures that the younger generation and residents enjoy a healthier, more comfortable, and more meaningful life.
“The transformation of Batu Kawa can be clearly seen, especially in the surrounding villages.
“Now, the mosque and its surrounding areas have been expanded. There is a hall, spacious canopies, and a more comfortable mosque compound for community activities. This transformation benefits all residents,” he said.
He said this during the handover ceremony of a new funeral van and the launch of the Funeral Management Room at Masjid Darus Sakinah, Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, here today.
Dr Sim noted that while the handover of a funeral van may appear modest, it is an essential need for the local community.
“Together with the new funeral management room, this forms a complete package that will ease the community’s needs. All this is the result of cooperation between residents, the authorities, and charitable bodies such as OBYU,” he added.
Other notable developments include the Batu Kawa Riverbank Park and the Ang Cheng Ho quarry area, which has been transformed into a 70-acre recreational park.
“This park has become a nightly attraction, with 500 to 1,000 people enjoying leisure and recreational activities.
“It not only attracts youths, but also the elderly and families who come to relax and spend time together.
“It is proof of how cooperation between the government, the private sector, and the community can produce something remarkable,” he added.
Dr Sim also shared future plans for Batu Kawa, including the development of three new bridges, a large shopping centre, and phased housing and apartment projects.
He explained that these plans would become a model of sustainable development in line with Sarawak 2030.
“In addition to physical development, flood mitigation projects are also being implemented, including the construction of a 20-acre retention pond, the first of its kind in Sarawak to contain excess water.
“This pond can also be used for public activities when there is no flooding, adding recreational value for residents,” he said.
Batu Kawa is now not only an example of physical development but also provides facilities for residents’ daily needs, family recreation, and more organised community activities.
“This rapid transformation signifies the state’s commitment to remain progressive, prosperous, and united.
“All these developments are aimed at ensuring that the younger generation and residents enjoy a healthier and more comfortable life,” he added.
Also present at the event were founder and advisEr of OBYU, Tan Sri Bustari Yusuf; Chairman of OBYU Foundation, Datuk Dr Hatta Solihi; OBYU Foundation trustee, Datuk Ahmadi Yusoff; and Chairman of Padawan Municipal Council, Tan Kai.
