LUNDU: Villagers of Kampung Pasir Tengah here are set to benefit from the RM400,000 Batu Wangkang Agricultural Road Project, which aims to improve road access for farmers and support the development of new settlements.

The project, implemented under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA), was officially launched with a ground-breaking ceremony attended by Opar assemblyman, Billy Sujang, on Wednesday.

Billy highlighted that the improved road infrastructure would provide greater convenience for farmers in transporting their produce while also opening up new opportunities for housing and development in the area.

“This project will greatly benefit the residents of Kampung Pasir Tengah by providing better access for them to carry out agricultural activities,” he said.

“Furthermore, Batu Wangkang, which holds historical significance, also has the potential to be commercialised as a tourist attraction, thereby increasing awareness of our historical heritage.”

Batu Wangkang, located in Kampung Pasir Tengah, is believed to be one of seven legendary ships that once explored inland areas before being stranded and turned into stone.

The site holds deep historical value, but a lack of conservation efforts has led to the loss of several artefacts, including the ship’s steering wheel, anchor ropes, and stone slippers.

Local residents believe that preserving Batu Wangkang and promoting it as a historical tourism destination could help safeguard the village’s heritage while also creating economic opportunities for the community.

With the improved road infrastructure, the villagers are hopeful that greater accessibility will encourage conservation efforts and attract more visitors to appreciate the unique history of Batu Wangkang.
