BAU: The opening of the Bau Ramadan Bazaar today drew crowds from all walks of life despite torrential rain.
Organised by the Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) Melayu Bau and the Bau Malay Association in collaboration with the Bau District Council, this year’s bazaar saw 45 traders setting up stalls at Bau Market.
None of the traders were required to pay rental or usage fees, thanks to the generosity of guest of honour, Transport (Riverine and Marine) Deputy Minister, Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, who sponsored tents for all of them.
The Tasik Biru state assemblyman officially launched the event and used the occasion to reflect on the profound social value that such gatherings held for the district.

“As a native son of Bau, I deeply value the spirit of unity here. The tolerance shown by all residents has greatly contributed to the development that flourishes in this area,” Henry said.
Beyond its role as a marketplace, he described the bazaar as a vital social institution – one that reconnected old friends, celebrated traditional cuisine, and taught younger generations the importance of mutual respect in a diverse society.
Henry noted that even the simple act of purchasing food for breaking fast could serve as a powerful bridge between communities.
Bau Malay Association chairman, Alwie Bol, echoed this sentiment, expressing hope that the bazaar would transcend commerce and become a true gathering point where residents shared not only food but blessings.
“May this Ramadan bazaar be not merely a place of trade but a community hub where we come together and share our blessings,” he said.
The event was attended by Bau District Officer, Eddy Nayoi; Bau District Police chief, P/Supt Mohd Haide A. Rahman; Temenggong of the Bidayuh Community for the Kuching Division, Temenggong Atok Derop; community and ethnic leaders as well as heads of various government departments. – JAPEN
