BAU: The historic town of Bau could follow in the footsteps of Kunming, China, where limestone formations alone could attract international tourists.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Bau’s unique geological features, including limestone hills, caves and soil structure, can be developed into a world-class tourism destination.
This, he said, would put Bau on the international map as a destination for scientific research and sustainable tourism.
“There’s a place in Kunming where the main attraction is purely geological – just stones. People come by the busloads just to see limestone rocks with various formations.
“That’s the only attraction, yet there are food and beverage businesses thriving around the area.
“Bau area is already attracting researchers and scientists to study what lies beneath. It has high value as a natural asset,” he said.
He said this at Bau’s 205th Anniversary Celebration, held in conjunction with Pesta Tasik Biru and Tasik Biru Resort City, here today.
Abang Johari noted that Bau is already recognised as part of the Sarawak Delta Geopark, one of only four geoparks in Malaysia alongside those in Perak.
He said efforts are underway to elevate the Sarawak Delta Geopark, which includes Bau, to the status of UNESCO Global Geopark within the next five years.
“We are currently in the preparation stage. Once successful, Bau will gain international recognition as a UNESCO geopark.
“Such recognition would not only strengthen conservation efforts but also generate sustainable economic opportunities for the local community,” he added.
As such, Abang Johari urged locals to protect the town’s geological heritage and support Sarawak’s ambition to place Bau on the world map through responsible and inclusive development.
