SARIKEI: The Phase 2B upgrading project of the Bayong Water Treatment Plant here has now been completed.
This RM68.4-million project, fully funded by the Sarawak government, is highly significant as it increases the plant’s capacity from 70 million litres per day to 100 million litres per day.
Utility and Telecommunication Minister, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, said the increased capacity will enhance the existing water supply system in the Sarikei Division, particularly in Tanjung Manis, Belawai and Pulau Bruit.
“The scope of the project includes the construction of a new water treatment plant with a capacity of 30 million litres per day, the building of an intake point, the installation of raw water pipelines, and other related works.
“To ensure quality and continuous water supply in Sarikei, the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) will strive to ensure that all ongoing projects are completed within the stipulated time frame, thus expanding water supply coverage and effectively resolving water supply issues,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters during a site visit to the Bayong Water Treatment Plant today.
On another note, Julaihi added that the implementation of the Julau Water Supply Project (Package 1), valued at approximately RM25.7 million and currently under construction, aims to improve the existing water supply system in Julau and the surrounding areas.
He said the water supply project has been carefully planned by the state government through the ministry and JBALB as the implementing agency to meet the increasing demand for water supply.
“This project, fully funded by the state government, is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
“It involves the construction of a new water treatment plant with a capacity of 3.4 million litres per day, the building of a raw water intake point, a raw water pump station, and the installation of 28 kilometres of new pipelines.
“Once completed, it will significantly benefit residents in Julau and the surrounding areas with a more consistent and continuous water supply,” he said.
He also emphasised that to ensure better and continuous water quality in Sarikei, JBALB will ensure that all ongoing projects are completed within the set timeframe.
