SARATOK: The younger generation in Sarawak has been urged to embrace knowledge and technology as the foundation for building a brighter and more prosperous Malaysia.

In making the call Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri said every Malaysian is an heir to the nation’s independence, which was won through the sacrifices of freedom fighters.

“Let us never forget that our fighters once took up arms to secure the independence we enjoy today.

“We are fortunate to be born into peace and stability, with all our needs provided for. Therefore, be a generation that is courageous, united, and devoted to the nation.

“Embrace knowledge, technology, and the spirit of struggle to build a better future for our country,” he said when officiating the Saratok-level Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang at Rumah Panjang Brues, Sungai Antu, Tuesday (Aug 26).

Mohamad stressed that independence is not merely about being free from colonial rule, but about how citizens fill that independence with purpose.

“The essence of independence requires continuous effort and hard work to build a society that is progressive, knowledgeable, ethical and respectful.

“We must continue to strengthen the economy, broaden access to education and healthcare, and ensure balanced and inclusive development,” he said.

He added that Saratok is blessed with harmony despite its multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and multicultural composition.

“Saratok, though rural, remains an important heartbeat of Sarawak’s independence. Our people working in fields, seas, farms, schools, and offices all contribute to the development of the state and nation.

“This is the true blessing of independence that we must preserve together,” he noted.

Mohamad also expressed pride that Rumah Panjang Brues, Sungai Antu, was chosen as one of the stopover locations for the state-level convoy.

“This convoy is more than carrying flags; it is a symbol of unity, love, and loyalty for the nation,” he said.

He called on Saratok residents to display the Jalur Gemilang and Ibu Pertiwi flags at their homes and premises as a show of love and devotion to the state and country.
